Ilha da Queimada Grande or Snake Island
This island in the Atlantic Ocean looks like a paradise. It is only 35 km from the State of Sao Paulo (Brazil). However, it is closed for visitors.
Ilha da Queimada Grande is home to one of the most venomous snakes in the world, botropase. Its bite causes an immediate necrosis, a sort of putrefaction to the very bones. The whole body of human or animal decays completely. The result is death. The Botrops insularis venom is one of the most poisonous in the world.
The authorities of Brazil have been protecting the island. They declared it is an extraordinary nature reserve, which is almost fully untouched by a man and is the biggest natural serpentarium in the world. You can find from 1 to 5 snakes on one square meter of the island.
In Bolivia, there is one of the most dangerous roads in the world, the North Yungas Road. It passes over a precipice about 600 m deep.
In some areas, the road is so narrow that only one truck can pass at a time and even then with one wheel hanging over the precipice. But there is no way around it; this is the only route that connects the city of Coroico and the capital of Bolivia, La Paz.
Each year, the road kills 200-300 people. However, it is one of the favorite tourist attractions. Tourists come here by bikes.
The height of the mount is only 1,917 m, and even though it is the highest in the north-east of the U.S., this is not what it is unique for. It has long hold the world’s record for the strongest wind speed ever noticed on the surface of the Earth. The weather stations and observatories situated on the mountain can sustain wind speeds of up to 500 km/h.
This desert is known as the Hell on the Earth. It is a destination of very high temperatures and poisonous gases coming out from under the ground. It is hard to take a step here because of volcanos. However, the landscape is so beautiful that you might think you are on another planet.
